New members of Youth Parliament 2011

Six new Ministers and Deputies were elected out of a possible 17 candidates in the UK Youth Parliament Elections at County Hall on 18th February 2011.

What happened?

On Friday 18th February 2011 the newly elected members for the UK Youth Parliament were announced. After three months of elections all over the County a total of 15% of the 11 – 18 population cast their vote. Candidates were divided into North Oxfordshire, South Oxfordshire and Oxford City. 17 candidates stood for only six available roles. The newly elected members range in age from 13 year old Alex Stevenson in South Oxfordshire to 17 year old Zak Khan in Oxford City. 

Zak said, “It’s such a privilege to work with an amazing team, it’ll be an amazing year!”

Due to the number of excellent candidates this year an ‘Ambassador’ role was created providing three extra spaces across the County.

The elections were coordinated by the Participation and Play Team within Oxfordshire County Council and have been part of UKYP since 2008. Alison Partridge, Strategic Lead said, “This year we have more than doubled the amount of votes for UKYP, these young people are passionate about making a difference and UKYP really gives them a chance to do that.”

In Oxford City Zak Khan from Cheney School was elected as Member of Youth Parliament, Joe Lawes from St Gregory the Great School was elected as Deputy Member and Livi Elsmore from Cherwell School is Ambassador. In South Oxfordshire Alex Stevenson from Langtree School was elected as the Member, with Alex Lushington, Larkmead School elected as Deputy and David Hunt from Fitzharry’s received Ambassador. In North Oxfordshire Holly Laverick from Bicester Community College was elected as Member of Youth Parliament, with Sam Hatzigeorgiou from the Warriner School receiving Deputy and Alexander McClellan from Bloxham School receiving Ambassador.
