Children in Care Councils get a national voice

A young representative of Oxfordshire's Children in Care Council is to attend the first regional meeting of Children in Care Councils at the Department for Education in London on 23rd March 2011.

What's the story?

A national platform for Children in Care

Oxfordshire's Children in Care Council is taking part in an exciting event. For the first time the young Chairpersons of Children in Care Councils will meet with children from other councils in their region for discussions. The Children’s Minister, Tim Loughton, has asked the Department for Education's Children in Care division to organise a series of  meetings for young people. The Children's Rights Director for England, Roger Morgan, will attend the meetings. His job is to listen to what children and young people in care have to say about how they are looked after. A representative from A National Voice will also be there. They are an organisation run by young people with experience of being in care, for other young people in care.

Oxfordshire's Children in Care Council is joint chaired by Alice Roe (16yrs) and Victoria Holland-Oakes (17yrs). A representative from the CICC will be attending the meeting on 23rd March to speak up about the amazing work of Oxfordshire's Children in Care Council.

Positive change

The aim of the meetings is to create positive changes to the Care System in England, and provide a national platform to hear the voices of around 60,000 children and young people who are looked after. To do this, Children in Care Councils need to share their experiences and find out what makes the biggest and best impact. The meeting on 23rd March should see the start of regular regional forums.

James Collins, the CICC Coordinator, said: "I see this meeting a great opportunity for us all to share good practise - what works well and what doesn't. After several years experience of the CICC being established in Oxfordshire we will have a lot to share"

A report of each meeting will be sent to the Children's Minister.
