Respect Us! 2009 was "extraordinary" and "an amazing night" said young people involved
On 26 February projects all over Oxfordshire highlighted their achievements with spectacular dance and music performances, film screenings, presentations and displays.
On Thursday 26 February at Oxford Brookes Students' Union, around 250 young people and adults came to the second of Oxfordshire County Council's 2 pilot events to celebrate young people's achievements. 32 projects displayed their work and there were dance and music performances, film screenings and presentations by 8 projects onstage with professional lighting and sound.
Members of the UK Youth Parliament and Divisional Young People's Forums helped to run the event, interviewing projects and presenting young people with Achievement Awards alongside the inspirational Kriss Akabusi.
Comments from the young people and adults who attended:
"What I liked best was seeing just a wide range of young people whether from disadvantaged backgrounds or successful and showing their special achievement. And ordinarily, there is people put in to different groups (colour, gender, status, sexuality) the event just put all those groups together to celebrate their achievement. Well Done! And I hope we see more of this." (YP)
"I thought it was really amazing because I met others that have put work into the community and I feel privileged to be here." (Adult)
"Interesting to find out more about activities in Oxford" (YP)
"It was great to see so many young people involved in such a wide range of positive projects within the community. The performances were fantastic and we appreciated the chance to be there." (Adult)
