Children and Young People's Sounding Board

Sounding Board logo

Get your views heard by adults on the issues that matter to you.

What do they do?

The Sounding Board is group of children and young people aged 7 – 21 (and 25 in some circumstances), who meet with the people who make decisions about things in Oxfordshire. They discuss how to improve services for children and young people, for instance how to stop bullying, or how to support disabled children and young people better.

The Sounding Board meets 4 times each year. There is also one meeting the week before Sounding Board to get ready for it.  We call it a 'pre-meeting'. We have a get-together at the beginning of the Sounding Board to get to know everyone, and a thank you celebration at the end of your involvement. The meetings are fun and informal – but we have important things to discuss too!

We try and get a really wide range of people from different circumstances, who are different ages, from different cultures, with different abilities and living in a range of areas across the county. We have some new and some old members each year.

At the start of each meeting, one of the adults from Oxfordshire County Council tells everyone what has happened since the last Sounding Board meeting, and how your views have helped to change things.

Two members of the Sounding Board will also be members of the Children and Young People’s Board and Local Area Trust Board, which are meetings where major decisions about services for children and young people are made.

About the role

You will meet for Sounding Board after school and in the holidays, so you don’t have to miss school! Usually we have our pre-meeting in Wolvercote Youth centre and our main meeting in County Hall, Oxford. We always have light refreshments at all meetings.

We ask everyone to stay for 1 year, but it’s great if you choose to stay for 2 years!

Travel

We encourage use of public transport and we can refund your fares. Talk to us if there's a big problem with getting there.

Payment

It is voluntary, but you will gain an AQA qualification and receive a special unique folder at end of your term.
