Sexual Health - Views to Improve

Steph, young person from Oxford City explains how she and other young people are helping to shape sexual health services across Oxfordshire

What has your group been created for?

The Primary Care Trust (PCT) has funding for sexual health services aimed at young people. We had 3 meetings (one was a training and information workshop) and came up with ideas about what young people want and need from sexual health services. These ideas will go back to the PCT and help them decided how to spend the money.

How has it made a difference?

Once the improved services are in place it will help young people to have someone to speak to and get help with questions on sexual health.

Young people will take on board the advice a lot more and it will help with young people getting information and being able to make decisions and look after themselves. It might help out with teenage pregnancy these days too.

I feel really chuffed, none of my ideas have gone this far before.

What do you do in your group?

We brainstormed our ideas on where we should go to get help on Sexual Health. Our idea was instead of young people speaking to adults, it would be good to speak to other young people as we seem to understand each other better. Young people should be trained to go around to schools and youth clubs to help explain where you can go to talk about sexual health and get advice on where you can get the information and things you need!

How do you make sure that every child or young person is heard?

We take it in turns to put our ideas down and talk about it. We ask quieter people what they thought instead of letting them sit back, instead of just listening, they can say their views on everything.
