Sounding Board

The story of Oxfordshire's Sounding Board by Sounding Board member Paul

What has your group been created for?

The Sounding Board has been created for children and young people with varied backgrounds to get together and to voice their own views and discuss how we can make improvements to certain areas of the county

How has it made a difference?

It has made a difference to people who would normally not have a say in subjects they feel passionate about and also all the ideas put forward by the children and young people are taken into account by top people

What do you do in your group?

We meet a 8 times a years and we have a pre meeting with just children and young people where we discuss the subject of the meeting which could be school improvements, parenting, drugs, bullying, etc. We then get into groups and write our ideas up for the week after when we meet up with top people or “big wigs” as the children and young people named them and put our ideas and opinions across.

How do you make sure that every child or young person is heard?

We always make sure that before the start of every session we have to tell everyone including staff that it should always be one person at a time talking and to respect the person’s views.

The adults always feed back at the meetings on what they have done about the issue we discussed, since we last met
