BigVoice hears from Michelle Eyre on the Children and Young People's Disability Forum

What has your group been created for?

To provide disabled children and young people with exciting opportunities to have their say on how things like transport, the environment, schools and work can work better for everyone.

How has it made a difference?

Oxfordshire Youth Enablers started in October 2008 and has already been responsible for two reports on the views of disabled children and young people Short Breaks and economic wellbeing. We were asked by the National Youth Agency to lead part of a workshop for a national conference ‘Right on the Money’, our views were heard by MPs and senior civil servants.

What do you do in your group?

My job is to work with young people to establish networks of disabled children and young people to influence local and national government.

Here are two reports about the work our group has done on short breaks (pdf format, 1.38 MB) and on the economic wellbeing (pdf format, 127kb) of disabled children and young people.

How do you make sure that every child or young person is heard?

We are providing accredited training for OYE! members to learn how to go out and meet other disabled children and young people, collect their views, and pass them on to the decision makers in the Council. We will be having regular meetings, sending out regular communications, and are always happy for new people to get involved.
