Community Chest Children's Panels

Western Corner Children's Panel tell their story of playing their part in being in charge of £55,000 a year!
What has your group been created for?
We meet at Western Corner every 2 weeks, it’s been really fun being in charge of the Community Chest.
We are in charge of deciding on how much money we give to children and young people (5-13 years) for out of school activities.
How has it made a difference?
Children and young people apply to us to do things like Dance, Hockey, football and camps. Mostly people get Community Chest. Without Community Chest they might be left out and not have their chance to play or learn a new skill.
What do you do in your group?
Our jobs are Chair, accountant, artist in residence, reader, timer keeper, reporter and food dude.
Once we've decided we write cheques at the meeting.
Every meeting we look at up to 12 applications spending on average £1,000.
How do you make sure that every child or young person is heard?
The chair makes sure everyone has their turn. We say “one voice” and go round in a circle. You can pass and come back if you are not ready with your opinion.
It feels good that adults actually let us be in charge and listen, it is a bit unusual and strange.
