Better transport for young people
A Young People's Transport Charter Group have set out their vision of a reliable, affordable and safe public transport system for young people, to make it easier for them to get to positive activities in Oxfordshire.
What happened?
Young transport pioneers from the Vale of White Horse District Council and South Oxfordshire District Council Youth Forum have come up with creative ideas for the future of transport in Oxfordshire, with the aim of improving access to positive activities. Ben, Naomi, Eleanor, Helen, Charlotte, Katy, David and Alex presented their ideas in two Transport Charter Workshops this year.
The group were told there would be no transport concessions or funding. With this in mind, the young people's group made these main points and leading suggestions.
- Improve reliability
- "Timetables to be young person friendly in a range of formats"
- Marketing and PR
"Bring in commercial sector (big brands) providers of positive activities to sponsor transport"
- Creative ideas
"Joined up tickets that you can use on all forms of transport"
- Young people’s safety and dignity
"Challenges to a young person’s ticket e.g. age etc should be managed with the young person’s safety as paramount"
- Improving Information
"Easily accessible young person friendly travel website"
- Affordability
"Child prices for those in full time education"
- Consider vulnerable groups
"those with physical learning disabilities; young carers; looked after children (all traveling as groups to recreational and leisure opportunities)"
“Reliable, affordable, comprehensive and safe transport for young people is a key ingredient to young people’s quality of life as it enables them to access a wide range of leisure and recreational opportunities, supports their friendships and broadens their horizons.”
