Oxfordshire Youth Enablers - OYE!

A young disabled man from the Oxfordshire Youth Enablers smiles broadly, sitting at a table with his arms over his chest

Disabled children from across Oxfordshire met with Oxfordshire County Council to share their expertise on what would make good short breaks for disabled children and young people.

What happened: Thirteen disabled children aged 8-21 from across Oxfordshire met in at the Ormerod Centre, Woodstock to tell Oxfordshire County Council what would make a good short break for disabled children and young people. The head of services for disabled children was interviewed about the new short breaks scheme. Then "Graffiti walls" were created with thoughts about activities; the group came up with 45 different suggestions! Things like street dancing, go-karting, cooking, hot air ballooning, abseiling, surfing, bike jumping and console games.

One of the participants said: ‘Make short breaks accessible to everyone - not just us lot - if you live in Banbury, Kidlington - even in the outback - make it accessible”

Date:  January 2009

Venue:  Ormerod Centre, Marlborough School, Woodstock

Next Steps: OYE! agreed that a report needs to be written and sent out to let people know about the group. The group wants to meet again in the future.  The times to meet are at weekends, evenings in term time or in the school holidays with  Oxfordshire County Council paying for the transport.
