About me

I live in a tiny village called Middle Aston in North Oxfordshire. I am in year 10 at the Warriner School in Bloxham. I have recently taken part in take-over week; this is a national event where young people take on the roles of people in positions of authority. I shadowed a councillor and gave a speech to seventy-five councillors, in this speech I spoke about the issues that MyView and UKYP have been discussing. I also spoke on BBC radio Oxford as part of takeover week.

Why did I stand?

I wanted to stand because I am a member of the Oxfordshire Youth Parliament now called MyView and I would like to take my views and ideas beyond a county level. I am a member of the school student council and hope to be re-elected in November. I think I am a good public speaker and I also think I have many ideas about how to make this country better for young people.

My key issues are:

  • Public transport in rural areas
  • 6th Former buses
  • Votes at 16

Public transport in rural areas

The public transport in my area is appalling; the nearest bus stop is over five miles away so it is easier to get in the car. I am not just bringing this up for my benefit but for the whole of my area. When young people do decide to walk the five miles they have to pay extortionate prices in bus fare. Young People don’t have jobs to pay for these fares. I want the people in power to look again at transport policy for all age groups and to find a way to make public transport free for young people.

6th Former buses

Students who decide to go to sixth form often have to pay over £100 a term to cover the cost of transport, that’s £600 a year. For some families that’s simply not affordable. The government should be encouraging young people into further education not deterring. For people in my position living a rural community finding a sixth form with easy access to them is almost impossible. I want there to be a plan for education post 16 across the county, where provision and transport are considered and planned for.

Votes at 16

I feel this is a very simple and easily resolved issue. I only have three things to say on the matter and that is:
you can join the army at 16, you can drive at 17 but you can’t vote until you are 18. To me this is ludicrous.

I will listen to you!

Many of the ideas on this manifesto have come from the people in my school, the community and the constituency I will be representing. I will carry on listening to your views and representing them no matter how big or small. I will represent my community and the whole of Oxfordshire, because I believe it is vitally important that every person should have their say and have their voice and opinion heard.

Thank you Francesca Ingall
