Tell the Government your views on learning

14-19 Learner Panels

What do they do?

The 14 – 19 learner panel is a new idea being set up by the Government. If you're between 13 and 20yrs and studying for (or thinking about) qualifications like functional skills, young apprenticeships, NVQ, GCSE or A Level, and you have things to say about your experience of learning, you can apply to join the 14-19 Learner Panel.

The panel will be twenty learners in the 13-20 age range taking all kinds of qualifications. Panel members will give their views to the Government on their personal experience of what works well and what could be improved in 14 – 19 education. This will help the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and other organisations understand what they need to do to improve things in future.

You will discuss things like:

  • What is it like taking a course?
  • Where are the lessons and activities are held in different schools and colleges?
  • What do learners want and how would they like to receive this?
  • How can functional skills be included in other courses and qualifications?
  • What are the policy reasons for changes to 14 – 19 education?

About the role

If you become a member of the 14 – 19 learner panel, you will be expected to attend some meetings and events. On your application form you will see information about these.

Travel

You will be travelling to different regions in England for the meetings.

Meeting timings will be arranged so that return travel will be possible within one day. However, if your journey time is more than four hours each way, accommodation will be arranged for you (and your parent/guardian/carer if you are under 18) overnight near to the meeting venue).

Payment

Membership of the panel is voluntary. However, members will be given vouchers or other incentives for their time, and all travel, refreshments and childcare expenses will be covered – both for you and for your parent/guardian/carer if you are under 18 years old. If you have any special needs we will provide the necessary support.
