£8.25 million for young people's voices
More money for young people to speak out
Beverley Hughes is the Minister for Children and Young People. She has announced that £8.25 million will be given on top of the £8 million from 2006, to be spent on giving disadvantaged children and young people the chance to produce creative media projects, through Mediabox.
Mediabox is a project which gives them the skills to express their ideas on issues they think matter, using print, television, film, radio, digital, or online media. Since the projects started in 2006, young people’s projects have been showcased on the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, YouTube and MySpace.
Andrew Stirling, aged 19, from Newcastle, got funding from Mediabox to create a computer animation. He chose to explore what it means to be rejected from your home and outcast from society. Andrew has now applied for a Computer Animation course.
He says: “Mediabox has given me so much and asked for so little. It let me do something that I always wanted, all in the bid to broaden my horizons and hopefully broaden my career prospects in the process. Two years ago I was homeless and wanted to make something of my life. By doing this one Mediabox project I have learnt so many new skills and developed my confidence. I will see the effects of it throughout my entire life.”
